Cookies Policy
Last updated: May 23, 2026
1. Introduction
This Cookies Policy explains how Smash Tech Group ("Company", "we", "us", "our") uses cookies and similar technologies on the Tails Up website at https://tailsup.gr ("Website") and the Tails Up mobile application ("App").
This policy should be read together with our Privacy Policy, which provides further details on how we process your personal data.
2. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device (computer, tablet, or smartphone) when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites function properly, improve performance, and provide information to the website operators.
Cookies can be:
- First-party cookies: Set by the website you are visiting (tailsup.gr).
- Third-party cookies: Set by a domain other than the one you are visiting (e.g., analytics or payment providers).
- Session cookies: Deleted when you close your browser.
- Persistent cookies: Remain on your device for a set period or until you delete them.
3. Cookies We Use on the Website
3.1. Strictly Necessary Cookies
These cookies are essential for the Website to function. They cannot be disabled without affecting the usability of the Website. No consent is required for these cookies under EU law (Directive 2002/58/EC as amended by Directive 2009/136/EC).
| Cookie / Technology | Provider | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
session cookie | tailsup.gr | Authenticates you after sign-in. Issued by Tails Up after exchanging your Firebase ID token; contains an encrypted session token that identifies you to the server. | 14 days | First-party, Persistent, HTTP-only |
NEXT_LOCALE cookie | tailsup.gr | Stores your selected language (English or Greek) so the Website renders in the right language on each request. | 12 months | First-party, Persistent |
tu_cookie_consent cookie | tailsup.gr | Stores your cookie-consent choices so we do not re-ask on every visit. Without this cookie the consent banner would have to be shown again on each page load. | 12 months | First-party, Persistent |
Theme preference (localStorage) | tailsup.gr | Remembers your preferred visual theme (light or dark). Stored in your browser's localStorage, not as a cookie β required to render the interface in the mode you selected. | Until cleared by you | First-party, Persistent |
In addition, the Firebase Web SDK we use for sign-in stores its own short-lived authentication state in your browser's IndexedDB and localStorage to keep you signed in across page loads. This storage is set and read only by the Firebase SDK running in your browser and never leaves your device.
3.2. Analytics Cookies
We do not currently run any third-party web analytics on the Website β no PostHog, Firebase Analytics, Google Analytics, or comparable service is loaded in your browser when you visit tailsup.gr. If we add a web-analytics service in the future, we will update this policy and request your consent through the cookie banner before any analytics tracking starts. For information on the analytics technologies used inside the Tails Up mobile application, see Β§4.3 below.
3.3. Functional Cookies
We do not currently set any cookies in this category that go beyond what is already disclosed in Β§3.1 as strictly necessary. Your theme and language preferences are required to deliver the interface in the form you selected and are listed there. If we add optional functional cookies in the future (for example, an in-app feature toggle that survives sign-out), we will request your consent before setting them.
3.4. Third-Party Service Cookies
Some third-party services integrated into the Website may set their own cookies in your browser when their code runs:
| Service | Purpose | More Information |
|---|---|---|
| Firebase | Authentication. Firebase uses cookies and similar technologies in your browser to manage your sign-in session. | Google Privacy Policy |
We do not embed Stripe.js on the Website β when a payment is required, you are redirected to a Stripe-hosted page where Stripe's own cookies apply under Stripe's Cookie Policy. Stripe is described as a payment processor in our Privacy Policy.
3.5. Error Monitoring and Crash Reporting
We use Sentry on the Website to detect technical errors and degraded performance so we can fix bugs and keep the Service reliable.
| Technology | Provider | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sentry SDK | Sentry | Captures JavaScript errors, unhandled exceptions, and performance traces (sampled at 10 %). May include browser and device information and the URL path where the error occurred. | Retained by Sentry per our agreement with them | Third-party |
| Sentry Session Replay | Sentry | Records a redacted reconstruction of the page (DOM events) so we can reproduce errors. We sample 100 % of sessions in which an error occurs and 10 % of sessions overall. All text, form input values, and media are masked before leaving your browser β replays show layout and interaction patterns, not the content you typed or saw. | Retained by Sentry per our agreement with them | Third-party |
Lawful basis: We process this data under our legitimate interests (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)) in keeping the Service operational and secure. We have conducted a balancing test (legitimate-interests assessment) and concluded that the masked, sampled nature of the data does not override your rights and freedoms. You have an absolute right to object to this processing under Art. 21 β to do so, contact us at privacy@tailsup.gr.
4. Similar Technologies on the Mobile App
The Tails Up mobile application does not use traditional browser cookies. Instead, it uses the following similar technologies for equivalent purposes:
4.1. Essential Storage
| Technology | Purpose | Data Stored |
|---|---|---|
| Secure Store | Stores authentication credentials in your device's encrypted secure storage where the platform supports it (Keychain on iOS, EncryptedSharedPreferences/Keystore on Android). On devices where secure storage is not available β for example some simulators or older OS versions β the same data is stored in standard app storage. | API access token, refresh token, token expiration, biometric enrolment settings |
| Firebase Auth SDK | Manages authentication state within the app. | Encrypted auth tokens, session state |
4.2. Functional Storage
The Tails Up app stores a number of items in standard app storage (AsyncStorage) so it can render the interface you chose, work offline, and remember UI choices between launches. Grouped by purpose:
| Category | Examples | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Interface preferences | Theme (light/dark), colour palette, language preference, dismissal state for subscription / upgrade prompts | Renders the interface as you selected and avoids repeatedly showing prompts you have already closed. |
| Cached service data | Your pets, event types, feeding plan data, calendar state, pet photo URIs | Lets the app open quickly and continue to display your data when the network is slow or unavailable. |
| Guest account state | Anonymous guest user identifier, display name, country, city, expiry, and a local history of guest sessions previously created on this device | Lets you use the app without signing up, recover your guest data, and prevents abuse of the guest flow on a single device. |
| Emergency contact | If you choose to add an emergency contact, that person's name and phone number are stored on your device only, for offline access. | Quick on-device access when you need the contact. The data is not transmitted to our servers unless you explicitly save it to your profile. |
| Consent record | Your cookie/preferences choices and the version of the policy you accepted. | The on-device twin of the tu_cookie_consent cookie used on the Website β lets the app remember your consent decisions without a sign-in. |
| Onboarding flag | Whether you have completed the first-run onboarding. | So we do not re-show the onboarding tour on every launch. |
You can clear all of this by signing out (which removes credentials), clearing the app's storage from your device settings, or uninstalling the app.
4.3. Analytics SDKs
| Technology | Provider | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| PostHog SDK | PostHog (EU) | Product analytics β tracks anonymised feature usage events to improve the app. Disabled in development. Data processed in EU (eu.i.posthog.com). |
| Firebase Analytics | Anonymised usage analytics and feature interaction tracking. | |
| Sentry SDK | Sentry | Error and crash reporting β captures technical errors to help us fix bugs. May include device information and user context. |
4.4. Push Notification Tokens and Device Identifiers
| Technology | Provider | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) | Delivers push notifications to your device. A unique device token is generated and stored on our servers to enable notification delivery. |
Alongside the FCM push token, the app reads the platform-provided installation identifier β Identifier for Vendor (IDFV) on iOS, Android ID on Android β and sends it to our servers so we can match notifications and devices accurately when you reinstall or sign in on multiple devices. These are stable per-install identifiers provided by the operating system; you can reset them by uninstalling the app (iOS) or by resetting your device's advertising/identifier settings (Android).
4.5. Subscription Management
| Technology | Provider | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| RevenueCat SDK | RevenueCat | Manages your in-app subscription state and entitlements, validates purchase receipts with the Apple App Store and Google Play, and lets you restore purchases. Identifies you with an anonymous RevenueCat user ID tied to your Tails Up account. |
Lawful basis: Performance of contract (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)) β RevenueCat is structurally necessary to deliver the paid features you subscribed to, so this processing is not subject to a separate consent prompt. See our Privacy Policy for the full processor disclosure.
5. How We Use Cookies and Similar Technologies
We use cookies and similar technologies to:
- Authenticate you and maintain your logged-in session.
- Remember your preferences such as language and theme.
- Protect the security of your account and our Service.
- Understand usage patterns to improve features and user experience.
- Diagnose technical issues and fix bugs.
- Process payments securely through our payment providers.
6. Your Choices and How to Manage Cookies
6.1. Cookie Consent (Website)
When you first visit our Website, you will be presented with a cookie consent notice. You can choose to:
- Accept all cookies β all cookie categories will be activated.
- Accept only necessary cookies β only strictly necessary cookies will be used.
- Customise your preferences β select which categories of cookies you wish to allow.
You can change your cookie preferences at any time through the cookie settings on the Website.
6.2. Browser Settings
Most web browsers allow you to manage cookies through their settings. You can typically:
- View what cookies are stored on your device.
- Delete individual cookies or all cookies.
- Block cookies from specific or all websites.
- Set your browser to notify you when a cookie is set.
Please note that disabling essential cookies may affect the functionality of the Website, and you may not be able to use certain features (such as logging in).
Browser-specific instructions:
- Chrome: Settings > Privacy and Security > Cookies and other site data
- Firefox: Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data
- Safari: Preferences > Privacy > Manage Website Data
- Edge: Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Cookies and site data
6.3. Mobile App Settings
For the mobile app, you can manage data collection through the app's Settings β Privacy & data screen and your device's system settings:
- Analytics (PostHog, Firebase Analytics): Toggle on or off at any time in Settings β Privacy & data. Turning it off stops the analytics SDKs from sending events; turning it on resumes them. No email request is required.
- Marketing communications: Toggle on or off in Settings β Privacy & data. You can also unsubscribe from any marketing email via the one-click unsubscribe link in the message footer, which works without a sign-in.
- Push notifications: Choose which categories of push notifications you receive via the app's notification preferences, and disable push entirely via device settings (Settings > Notifications > Tails Up).
- Location data: Revoke location permission via device settings (Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Tails Up).
- Clear app data: You can clear the app's local storage through your device settings, which will remove cached preferences and data (you will need to sign in again).
6.4. Do Not Track
Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal. There is currently no industry standard for how websites should respond to DNT signals. We will update this policy if a standard is established and adopted.
6.5. Opt-Out of Analytics
You can opt out of the analytics services used in our mobile app at any time:
- PostHog (mobile) and Firebase Analytics (mobile): Both are gated behind your consent and can be toggled on or off in Settings β Privacy & data inside the app. Turning the Analytics toggle off stops both SDKs from sending events.
We do not currently run third-party analytics on the Website (see Β§3.2). If we add any, you will be able to opt in or out through the cookie consent banner.
7. Data Retention for Cookies
| Cookie Type | Retention |
|---|---|
| Session cookies | Deleted when you close your browser |
| Authentication cookies | Up to 14 days |
| Analytics data | Up to 24 months |
| Preference cookies | Until you clear them or change preferences |
| Mobile secure storage | Until you log out or clear app data |
| Mobile async storage | Until you clear app data or uninstall |
8. Updates to This Policy
We may update this Cookies Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the cookies we use or for legal, operational, or regulatory reasons. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy on the Website with a new "Last Updated" date.
We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
